Leadership Lessons from Life’s Special Moments

As we wrap up 2024, I’m reflecting on a perfect anniversary celebration that unexpectedly delivered powerful leadership insights. This weekend, celebrating 23 years of marriage, my partner and I hit the slopes in Tahoe for a magical powder day. Picture this: pristine snow, Santa skiing down the mountain, and festive naughty-or-nice hot chocolate (we chose naughty, with a splash of peppermint schnapps!).

But here’s where it gets interesting from a leadership perspective…

At every turn, I witnessed exemplary leadership principles in action. The mountain staff delivered seamless service because they fully understood their mission: creating an unforgettable experience for every guest. Later, at Gordon Ramsay’s new Reno restaurant, our waiter provided exceptional service – not because he knew it was our anniversary, but because excellence was clearly woven into the restaurant’s DNA.

This reminded me of Ramsay’s crystal-clear mission statement: “to provide exceptional food and service in a variety of settings.” It’s not just words on a wall – every team member lives and breathes this commitment.

The Leadership Take-Away

Great leaders don’t just craft mission statements; they ensure every team member understands, embraces, and embodies that mission. When team members aren’t aligned, effective leaders face a critical choice: invest in bringing them up to standard or make the tough decision to part ways.

Your 2025 Leadership Challenge

As we approach 2025, ask yourself:

  • Does your team truly understand and embrace your mission?

  • Are you consistently communicating and reinforcing that mission?

  • Do your actions as a leader align with your stated mission?

  • Where are the gaps between your mission and your team’s performance?
