Finding Your Way Back: Leadership Resilience Through the Low Points

October 31, 20242 min read

Over the weekend, I unplugged and watched my son at a basketball showcase. During a quiet moment, he confided in me about feeling defeated in his basketball journey. His vulnerability sparked a deeper reflection on the natural ebb and flow of our pursuits—both in sports and leadership.

Every leader faces moments when their energy wanes. Whether you're a CEO, VP, manager, or entrepreneur, these periods of feeling defeated or depleted are natural parts of the leadership journey. The key is knowing how to navigate through them.

Your Mission as Your North Star

In these challenging moments, your mission statement becomes your compass. Take it out and read it carefully. Let it reconnect you with your core purpose and reignite the spark that started your journey. A well-crafted mission statement does more than inspire—it grounds you in your vision and reminds you why you began this path.

Reflection and Realignment

Take a moment to envision your future impact:

  • On your organization

  • On your team

  • On your family

  • On your own life

The Power of MMA: Measure, Monitor, Adjust

Sometimes the path to your dreams requires course correction. Examine your daily activities and ask:

  • Do they align with your ultimate vision?

  • Are you staying true to your core objectives?

  • What adjustments could better serve your goals?

Leading Through Example

As a leader, you have the unique opportunity to show others how to navigate their own low points. Share your experience of using MMA (Measure, Monitor, Adjust) to realign and reinvigorate your purpose. Your resilience becomes a model for your team.

Embrace the Cycle

Remember: these low points are not endpoints but checkpoints. They're opportunities to reassess, realign, and emerge stronger. When you find yourself feeling depleted again—and you will—return to your mission, apply MMA, and smile. You're not off track; you're exactly where you need to be in your leadership journey.
