As a child, I was the kid who sat back, complained about participating in games, and was far from the go-getter I am today. I still think of all the times I didn’t feel well because I was uncomfortable being in the game. I didn’t like not being good and I certainly did not want to be teased or made fun of.   Looking back on that time in my life, I realized, yes I was young and learning, but I also realized I was not with the right people.  Thinking of this, it made me wonder: what makes people rise up? What transforms us from passive observers to active participants in our own lives? What makes one person go above and beyond?

The Catalyst for Change

My personal rise came when I discovered a few key lessons. First, I changed when I found something I truly wanted to pursue. Second, when I was surrounded by people that lifted me up, and Third, when I felt a part of the team to make something bigger than ourselves.  And that was just the beginning. The real transformation occurred when two crucial elements aligned:

  1. Self-Acceptance: I became comfortable with who I was.

  2. Supportive Environment: I surrounded myself with people who brought out the best in me.

When these two factors converged, I blossomed. This combination - self-acceptance and a nurturing community - is, I believe, the key to unlocking our potential.

The Power of Self-Acceptance in Leadership

Self-acceptance is the foundation of authentic leadership. When leaders are comfortable in their own skin, they:

  1. Lead with Authenticity: They don't waste energy trying to be someone they're not, allowing them to focus fully on their team and goals.

  2. Inspire Trust: Authentic leaders are more relatable and trustworthy, encouraging open communication within the team.

  3. Embrace Vulnerability: They're not afraid to admit mistakes or ask for help, creating a culture where it's safe to take risks and learn from failures.

  4. Model Growth Mindset: By accepting themselves while continuously striving for improvement, they inspire others to do the same.

Creating a Supportive Environment

A supportive environment is fertile ground for growth and innovation. This, I believe, is key to growth. I say often, our vibe attracts our tribe.  So does our environment and the community we foster.  How do we do this?  Here are few tips:

  1. Foster Support: Create a space where team members feel safe to express ideas, ask questions, and make mistakes without fear of ridicule or punishment.

  2. Celebrate Differences: Recognize and value different perspectives, backgrounds, and working styles within your team.

  3. Provide Resources: Ensure your team has the tools, training, and support they need to succeed in their roles.

  4. Encourage Collaboration: Create opportunities for team members to work together, share knowledge, and support each other's growth.

  5. Recognize Efforts and Achievements: Regularly acknowledge both individual and team accomplishments, not just the big, but the small. The small steps and wins lead to big growth

The Role of Leadership

This realization has profound implications for leadership. Great leaders don't just direct; they create an environment where people can rise up. They do this by:

  1. Assembling the Right Team: Like the Sorting Hat in Harry Potter, good leaders sift and sort to bring together like-minded individuals with complementary strengths.

  2. Fostering a Supportive Culture: They create an atmosphere where team members feel comfortable being themselves.

  3. Unleashing Individual Superpowers: They identify and nurture the unique talents of each team member.

  4. Building Synergy: They help the team work together, combining individual strengths to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

The result? An unstoppable team that works in harmony, each member rising to their full potential.

Tips for Bringing Out the Best in People

As a leader, your role is to unlock the potential in each team member. Here are some strategies to help you do just that:

  1. Know Your People: Take the time to understand each team member's strengths, weaknesses, aspirations, and motivations.

  2. Set Clear Expectations: Provide clarity on roles, responsibilities, and goals. People thrive when they know what success looks like.

  3. Provide Regular Feedback: Don't wait for annual reviews. Offer timely, specific feedback to help team members grow and improve continuously.

  4. Empower Decision-Making: Give team members the authority to make decisions within their areas of responsibility. This builds confidence and ownership.

By fostering self-acceptance and creating a supportive environment, you're not just building a team – you're nurturing a community of individuals who are empowered to rise up and achieve their full potential.
