The Art of Authentic Networking: Lessons from a Parents Weekend

November 06, 20242 min read

Sitting at the St. Louis airport, reflecting on a remarkable Parents Weekend at Washington University, I'm struck by how life's most meaningful lessons often come from unexpected moments. As both a parent and a business coach, this weekend offered profound insights about connection, growth, and the true essence of networking.

The Joy of Witnessing Growth

The most precious moment was seeing our daughter thriving in her element. There's something magical about watching your child explore, learn, and discover their authentic self in an environment that nurtures their potential. It's a reminder that growth happens when we're in the right ecosystem – surrounded by support, opportunities, and challenges that push us forward.

A Culture of Entrepreneurship and Leadership

What particularly impressed me about WashU was their comprehensive approach to student development. Their entrepreneurship program, coupled with the Leadership Lab's coaching resources, demonstrates a deep understanding of what today's students need to succeed. The level of advisor involvement in shaping students' trajectories mirrors what I've long advocated in the business world: meaningful mentorship creates exponential impact.

The True Power of Networking

When asked to potentially share insights with students about networking and net worth, I reflected on this fundamental truth: genuine networking isn't about personal gain – it's about service. The magic happens when we:

  • Remove our personal agenda from the equation

  • Take time to truly understand what drives others

  • Listen more than we speak

  • Focus on how we can add value to others' journeys

Building an Unstoppable Tribe

This philosophy extends beyond professional networking. Whether we're talking about:

  • Supporting friends in their "glow up" journey

  • Creating an employee-centric workplace culture

  • Cultivating meaningful professional relationships

The principle remains the same: surround yourself with people who elevate you, and be that uplifting force for others.

The Ripple Effect of Respect

Building on last week's discussion about company culture, treating every individual with genuine respect creates a magnetic environment. People naturally gravitate toward spaces where they feel valued, understood, and supported. This isn't just good business – it's good humanity.

A Call to Action

Take a moment to evaluate your "tribe." Are you surrounded by people who:

  • Celebrate your wins?

  • Support you during challenges?

  • Push you to grow?

  • Share your values?

If not, remember: it's okay to mindfully curate your circle. Being unstoppable requires an unstoppable tribe.

Final Thoughts

The greatest lesson from this weekend? Success – whether in business, education, or life – is rarely a solo journey. It's built on a foundation of authentic relationships, genuine support, and a commitment to lifting others as we climb.

What steps will you take this week to strengthen your tribe and be that positive force in someone else's journey?
