Winning the Race of Life: Lessons from the Kentucky Derby on Achieving Your Dreams

Lessons from the Derby

Over the weekend, my son and I were talking about his goals, his dreams and his observation of how his 16 year old friends reacted to his dreams. It got me thinking of the Derby this weekend and how it truly relates to not just dreaming but to actually working and going for your dreams.

The Kentucky Derby, one of the most prestigious horse races in the world, is a testament to the power of dreaming big and taking action. Just like the horses and jockeys who compete in this iconic event, whether you want to be part of the 1% or improve by 1%, it all starts with acting on your dreams. Too often, people settle for mediocrity, content with living an average life. However, if you want to achieve greatness, you need to break free from the "crab bucket" mentality and start running your own race.

The Crab Bucket Mentality: In the world of horse racing, there are always those who doubt a horse's ability to win. Similarly, in life, there are people who will try to pull you down when you attempt to escape your current situation. This "crab bucket" mentality can hold you back from reaching your full potential.

Training for Success: Just as a racehorse requires proper training and preparation to win the Kentucky Derby, you must put in the work to overcome mediocrity. Start by identifying your passion and setting clear goals. Break these goals down into smaller, manageable tasks – think of them as daily training sessions. Consistently working towards your objectives will help you build the strength and endurance needed to win your race.

The Importance of a Trainer: Every successful racehorse has a skilled trainer guiding its progress. Similarly, having a coach is crucial to your success. A coach will help you stay accountable, provide guidance, and push you to go against the grain. They will be your support system, helping you navigate the challenges you'll face along the way, just like a trainer helps a horse overcome obstacles on the track.

Running Your Race: On race day, the Kentucky Derby contenders must give their all, leaving nothing to chance. Once you have a plan and a coach, it's time for you to do the same. Take action, and don't wait for the perfect moment. When you hit obstacles, ask yourself: are you someone who settles, or someone who keeps pushing forward? Choose to persevere, even in the face of adversity.

Winning the race of life, whether that means joining the 1% or improving by 1%, requires the same dedication and effort as winning the Kentucky Derby. Don't settle for mediocrity; break free from the crab bucket mentality and start running your own race today. Hire a coach who has your back and will help you turn your dreams into reality. Remember, success is not about the destination, but the journey. Keep pushing forward, especially when you encounter obstacles, and you'll eventually cross the finish line victorious.
